The Wekiwa River runs through Wekiwa Springs State Park and was once inhabited by the Timucuan Indians. There are about 13 miles of hiking trails and you can also swim in the springs after your hike. I ended jumping in and got some good underwater photographs. The water stays around 72 degrees year-round.
I spent most of my time on the Volksmarch trail and it lasted for about 8 miles. This trail uses orange blazes. The trail was flat and clear. It went through the scrub, through a forest area and a recent controlled burn area. I looped back once I reached the pond and restroom area. I saw a gopher tortoise, a bunch of turkeys and a hungry raccoon while there but that was about it as far as wildlife went. I understand that if you are there at dawn or dusk then you’ll see a lot more when they come out to eat.

Wekiwa Springs State Park is a nice one. I really enjoyed the aspect of hiking and jumping into a spring all on the same day, even though that day was in January. I kept thinking about the spring I was going to jump into when I was done with my hike so I probably did it in record time. I liked the trail and the different vegetation along the way. I saw a number of people out on the trail that day so it’s a busy park. I suggest getting there early and plan on spending the day.
